Holding Back The Years With Skin Treatments
While many of appreciate the opportunity to grow old and live a full long life, many of us would just as soon avoid one typical side effect of that process: wrinkles. And science is telling us that, increasingly, there are ways for us to do such that. Skin treatments for wrinkles have exploded in number and variety in the past decade and this trend shows no sign of slowing in the near term.
As the large population of baby boomers have continued to move into their senior years, they have brought with them a growing acceptance of something that in the past was viewed as an act of vanity: namely, the pursuit, surgical or otherwise, to reduce wrinkles.
Where once plastic surgery was the only real option for reversing the effects of age on the skin, and the results of those surgeries were often quite obvious, today there are more options were far more subtle and effective results. Treatments have improved in terms of both breadth of alternatives and in their overall effectiveness.
Today, on the heels of developments from the biotech fields, dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons today have a range of options to help patients maintain or restore youthful appearance to their skin. These developments are hitting a ready market of people affluent enough to afford the sometimes high price tag of a youthful look.
Procedures like plastic surgery, laser resurfacing, injections and so on can run in the thousands of dollars, and can entail significant recovery times. But in a culture that values youth, many people feel that this expense is an investment, especially professionals who feel that looking younger gives them an advantage at the office. And this applies to women and men alike. Men are significant consumers of these procedures and the various prescription and over the counter creams and ointments as well.
The effectiveness of the treatment often depends on a variety of factors. For starters, most of these treatments will always work best as preventive measures, though many of them will help reverse the already visible signs of aging. Beyond that, the age and gender of the patient also plays a role.
And lifestyle plays a role as well. Those who have made a practice of avoiding sun exposure and cigarettes, in particular, will not only slow the aging process, they will be in a better position to benefit from treatment. And there are cautions about some of these treatments as well. There is no one procedure or cream that will work to remove one hundred percent of all wrinkles. Those will very deep wrinkles are unlikely to see a remarkable change with anything short of plastic surgery. And other procedures, like Botox for example, will produce effects that diminish over time.
As always, it is a good idea to consult a medical professional for his or her advice on the best course of treatment given your age, lifestyle, treatment objectives and budget. A dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon will be able to show you the range of options and discuss their related pros and cons.
